first CHALK4PEACE on 10/24/10 in their new location at
1333 Montana Ave. Joined by notable artists/authors
Laura Numeroff and Daniel Peacock, the community stopped
in all afternoon to share their messages and visions of peace
on the sidewalk of the celebrated bookstore and art gallery.
The rains washed away the art to finish the perfect Sunday.

they first decorated their courtyard for the first global event.

into the children's museum network.

IKAROS Solar Sail Will Travel The Galaxy with CHALK4PEACE Message

IKAROS (Interplanetary Kite-craft Accelerated by Radiation Of
the Sun) is a solar sail which gathers sunlight as propulsion by
means of a large sail. This solar powered sail craft will employ
both photon propulsion and thin film solar power generation
during its interplanetary cruise. The Planetary Society invited
the world to place messages into the Solar Sail. CHALK4PEACE
is sending this message into space:
"We ask others in the universe to join the planet Earth in
expressing their vision for intergalactic peace amongst peoples
and planets through CHALK4PEACE, which is a worldwide
sidewalk chalk painting project about peace. This event became
a global expression in 2006 AD. Its purpose is to draw the world
closer to peace because we have a lot to chalk about.

Notes on the Formation of a Department of Peacebuilding

CHALK4PEACE draws on the sidewalks of the world to express visions
and messages of peace. In some places, drawing on the sidewalk
with chalk is still against the law, punishable by stiff fines. Other
places, people have to get 24 hour permits to participate in such
an arts action. I choose to think that a Dept. of Peacebuilding
will advocate the relaxing of municipal ordinances nationwide
that classify chalk art as a form of graffiti to pave the way for
CHALK4PEACE to become an accepted public expression about peace.
Some might ask, "Is this really a significant issue?"
The fine for chalk drawing on the sidewalk in NYC is $350 or more.
If you draw on the sidewalk there, you're an outlaw?
Who's going to break it to the kids...?
CHALK4PEACE is in support of the formation of a Department
of Peacebuilding. We are pleased to see that it was one of
the Top Ten Ideas voted on at www.CHANGE.org.

At Glebe Elementary School, Arlington, VA, a young man
draws during CHALK4PEACE '06 with the aid of a
"Matisse Drawing Stick", a device similar to that which
Henri Matisse used to draw lifesize figures on large
canvases. Modified to hold chalk pastels, it allows the
chairbound and those with certain motor skill deficiencies
to reach the ground to create their drawings.

CHALK4PEACE wants EVERYONE to be able to draw the
world closer together for peace...

Finishing off a ten day CHALK4PEACE Awareness Campaign to DC
that included the Peace Alliance's Peace Within Reach Conference,
visits to four Fairfax County Schools, conversations with
congressional leaders, C4P supporters, Artomatic and Busboys
and Poets, the journey greatly expanded the awareness and
participation within the Beltway and around the world.

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting the Woodlawn
and Groveton Elementary Schools in Alexandria, VA to talk
with Marielle Mariano's students about CHALK4PEACE. They
had great questions and great answers; their enthusiasm for
CHALK4PEACE shows us that the young artists of the world
will always want to express their ideas about peace.

A blurry vision of peace as it all begins...Coming to Washington to attend the Peace Conference at a time
in history when the the Powers That Be aren't openly hostile
to its efforts as a think tank and an agent of change creates
a most refreshing and uplifting sense of optimism that suggests
that for once, someone's gonna listen. Consider also that this
is a rare instance in America that the populace might actually
be able to affect positive political change. There is now a
genuine possibility of the creation of a Department of Peace.
It is so not going to be easy; but this has the feeling of being
in the right place at the right time.
It's the first day of Spring.

Arrived in DC: Frank dropped me off in Arlington.
This is still on the door that used to be the front
door of the Museum of Modern ARF.
It is now a cool restaurant called Eventide.
Saw old friends and colleagues and have hooked up
with Marielle Mariano, C4P East Coast Coordinator,
for her talk at the Corcoran tonight.

Thoughts about Zimbabwe and the Tsvangirai Family...

From spending time in Zimbabwe a while back, I hold the
country and its people very near and dear to my heart: and
I feel great empathy for Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai,
who was injured Friday in the collision that killed his wife,
Susan.
Tsvangirai's Movement for a Democratic Change has been
successful in bringing the Prime Minister into a power-
sharing deal with long time President Robert Mugabe. As
Morgan Tsvangirai has been ceaseless and fearless in his
efforts to bring peace, stability and equity to Zimbabwe,
we at CHALK4PEACE say a prayer for Susan Tsvangirai and
extend our condolences to Mr. Tsvangirai, his family and
the nation of Zimbabwe for their great loss.

SIDE STREET PROJECTS ARTYARD,

The installation included a dozens of young artists of all ages
who helped create almost 200 clay dogs surrounding one

They are all expressions of CHALK4PEACE, the worldwide
chalk art project 4 peace.Courtyards and city centers,
playgrounds, parking lots and sidewalks become canvases
for world peace every September.
Our goal is for ONE MILLION artists to join us next September,
to show the world that we are giving peace its chance.

The SOS HERMAN GMEINER SCHOOL in BETHLEHEM, WEST BANK
shows us a rare glimpse into the true spirit of youth in the
Palestinian territory. It is clear that young people the world
over want PEACE. We sent chalk to them this year; we have not
heard if they were able to participate again in CHALK4PEACE.
